Our History
Our Lady Help of Christians acknowledges the Gimuy Walaburra Yidinji people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school and parish stand. We are grateful for their sharing of the Gindaja story of the Bukal region and their deep spiritual connection to Country.
Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1964 at the request of Bishop Cahill, the school bears the title of Mary, Our Lady Help of Christians—a name that emerged in the early 1800s as a call for Mary’s intercession and protection in times of hardship. This spirit of guidance, justice and peace remains central to our identity.
Led by founding Principal Sr Mary Consilla Wallwork, with Sr Rovena Duffy, the final Sister Principal in 1978, our school continues to embody the Mercy charism. Inspired by the Gospel, we nurture learners who are socially, spiritually, and ecologically aware, encouraging all to serve with compassion and to live with a ‘heart of mercy.’
